95 Technical Points establish the objective score. Up to five Significance Points recognise the qualities that make an exceptional automobile truly matter.

Technical foundation

Every car begins with 95 Technical Points.

The automobile enters the field from a position of quality. Technical Points are deducted only when a deviation from the appropriate original state, condition or specification is confirmed.

Up to five Significance Points may then be awarded. They are not automatic. They give the judging team a disciplined tool for recognising a car whose design, technology, provenance, historical importance or cultural impact makes it truly exceptional.

From technical excellence to the full 100 points.

A car that satisfies every technical criterion achieves the full 95 Technical Points. If that same automobile also represents exceptional design, outstanding provenance, major technological influence or important history, the judging team may award up to five Significance Points. It can therefore reach 100 points — the M100 expression of a 100 per cent complete and exceptional automobile.

The objective is not simply to reward the car with the fewest visible faults. It is to ensure that the best automobile wins the class while maintaining the requirement for correctness.

The authority remains with one qualified team: the judges entrusted to deduct Technical Points are also entrusted to award Significance Points. This keeps responsibility, expertise and judgement together.

If more than five Technical Points are deducted, the automobile is not strong enough overall for Significance Points to compensate. Significance distinguishes excellent cars; it does not rescue an inadequate one.

Proportion instead of punishment

A strict maximum deduction of two Technical Points per section.

To avoid the over-penalisation commonly found in traditional systems, deductions are strictly limited to two Technical Points in each of the 20 judging sections. The only exceptions are an out-of-period rebody and an engine that does not start, because each represents a fundamental issue rather than a minor deviation.

Across the 20 sections, the ordinary maximum deduction is therefore 40 Technical Points. Even a car with substantial shortcomings would ordinarily move from 95 to 55 points rather than being mathematically reduced beyond recognition.

This reflects an important principle: however imperfect or poorly presented a car may be, it remains a complete automobile with its own identity. The score should describe its shortcomings without treating it as nothing more than a collection of replaceable components.

Paint example

A flaw should not be scored like an absence.

In some systems, a five-point paint deduction can approach the numerical equivalent of a car having no acceptable paint at all. M100 caps the section deduction to protect the relationship between the fault and the automobile’s overall quality.

Cars are meant to be driven

Discreet modern adaptations are judged in context.

Preservation should not turn an automobile into a static object. Historic cars were designed to move, and judging should recognise carefully concealed adaptations that allow them to operate safely and reliably in present-day conditions.

Modern traffic can mean prolonged idling, low speeds, higher ambient temperatures and very different fuel formulations from those for which older cars were designed. These conditions can expose cooling limitations, vapour lock and ignition or fuel-delivery problems that were less pronounced in period.

Fuel volatility and composition continue to evolve. Future formulations may present further challenges for carburetted engines that rely on atmospheric induction and low-pressure fuel delivery. Where an adaptation is genuinely required, M100 evaluates it proportionately and in relation to the complete automobile.

  • Starting systems: a discreet electric starter may be acceptable on an early automobile originally dependent on manual starting, provided the installation does not disrupt its appearance or historic character.
  • Cooling systems: discreetly mounted electric auxiliary fans and improved radiator cores may support reliable use in slow modern traffic. The radiator’s original shape, dimensions and visible appearance should be retained.
  • Fuel supply: a discreet electric fuel pump may be used to help prevent vapour lock and maintain dependable fuel delivery in heat or prolonged low-speed traffic.
  • Ignition: concealed high-performance or electronic ignition systems may become necessary where modern or future fuel formulations make reliable operation increasingly difficult. The visible presentation and character of the original system should remain intact wherever possible.
  • Lighting: higher-performance bulbs may be fitted for safety when they remain discreetly contained within the original lamp housings and do not alter the shape, lenses or external appearance of the headlights.
  • Modern convenience: unobtrusively installed USB connections or similar equipment may be accepted when concealed and sensitively integrated.
  • Replacement materials: technically improved components, such as a stainless-steel exhaust, may receive proportionate treatment when presented with the correct period appearance.

These examples are not blanket permissions. The judging team considers necessity, visibility, reversibility, workmanship and the effect on authenticity. A discreet adaptation that enables safe and reliable use is fundamentally different from a conspicuous modification that changes the identity or period character of the car.

The best automobile should win.

A historically significant car should not lose a class solely because practical modern hoses or clamps introduce minor deviations. Its quality and history must remain visible in the result.

Ferrari 250 GT TdF and F50

At a U.S. East Coast event, a significant 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France that won its class at Le Mans in period was placed behind an almost undriven 1995 Ferrari F50 preserved as a “garage queen.” The comparison shows why exceptional technical condition alone should not eclipse provenance, competition history and wider significance.

Relevant functional checks

Test only what is essential.

Technical checks are deliberately limited to items essential for safe driving and the automobile’s basic operation. Functionality therefore focuses on meaningful road-use items, including headlights, taillights and brake lights, rather than peripheral equipment such as licence-plate lights or radios when those items are absent or not relevant to the car’s specification.

The principle is consistent throughout: confirm the deviation, understand its significance and deduct proportionately.
